Riding time: 7–9 hours (plus stops)
This is one of the most complete single-day rides in western Bhutan — a full loop combining high mountain passes, subtropical valleys, and some of the country’s most varied and spectacular landscapes.
Leaving Thimphu (2,300 m), we climb steadily through forested mountain roads to the iconic Dochula Pass (3,100 m). On clear days, the pass offers breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas, with a line of snow-capped peaks stretching across the horizon.
From Dochu La, the road descends dramatically into the warmer, subtropical valley of Punakha (1,200 m). Here, we visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong, set at the confluence of two rivers — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and significant dzongs in Bhutan.
Continuing on, the ride climbs once more through changing vegetation and open hillsides toward the high mountain pass of Pele La Pass (3,420 m). This marks the traditional boundary between western and central Bhutan and offers a more remote, expansive feel.
From Pele La, we descend slightly into the wide glacial valley of Gangtey (3,000 m) — known for its sweeping landscapes, traditional villages, and as the winter home of the rare black-necked cranes.
After time to take in the valley, we return toward Thimphu, crossing back over Dochu La as the light softens across the mountains, completing a long, varied, and deeply memorable day of riding.

Accomodation
Accommodation is not included on our one-day tours, as we assume you will already be in Bhutan and staying in either Paro or Thimphu. However, we are very happy to arrange this for you. We work with a selection of trusted hotels in both locations — well positioned, comfortable, good value, and motorbike-friendly. Airport transfers and additional transport can also be arranged if required. Please let us know if you would like accommodation and/or transfers included as part of your itinerary.
What to bring
For this one day ride, we understand that many riders will be travelling light and may not wish to carry full riding equipment for such a brief experience. Motorcycle helmets, gloves, and basic riding clothing can be hired locally in Bhutan, which works well for those coming from a wider journey. That said, we do recommend bringing your own helmet and personal riding gear if you have it, as fit and familiarity always make for a better ride. At a minimum, we suggest bringing warm layers and a good riding jacket, along with your preferred boots. Anything you don’t have, or choose not to bring, can be hired as required.
